Description’s Matt Cramer and Jerry Hoffmann now have a book out on EFI tuning! This book explains how EFI works and covers many aspects of EFI installation and tuning, including:

  • Tools  for working with electronics
  • How to build a good wiring harness
  • Selecting injectors, throttle bodies, fuel pumps, and other EFI system components
  • A comparison of various standalone EFI systems currently on the market
  • Dyno tuning and other tuning methods
  • Piggyback devices
  • Chips and stock ECU hacks
  • Troubleshooting EFI installations

Our approach to EFI systems and tuning was a purely practical angle, leaving out some of the super technical details that may tend to bog some down, and just trying to write about what the reader would need to know to make their project happen.  We cover all the basics, and then dive into tuning on the track and on the dyno, with very practical ‘how to tune’ type walkthroughs (fuel and ignition timing) to help the reader understand the process and remove the mystery. We also cover some common, and not-so-common troubleshooting scenarios and finish with case studies of customer cars,  demonstrating some of the unique issues and questions one might need to overcome and answer.

Performance Fuel Injection Systems is not a MegaSquirt-specific book but does speak from our experience. Many of the tuning software screenshots and other references/images will be familiar and recommended for anyone diving into a MegaSquirt project, as well as highly educational for someone diving into ANY EFI project. If you’re doing a MegaSquirt project and going to read one or the other, start with the free MegaManual, though Performance Fuel Injection Systems serves as the perfect compliment.

We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the entire core MegaSquirt project group: Bruce, Al, Lance, James, Ken, Phil R, Phil T, Eric. Also to many others that have helped and/or challenged us along the way, helping us to build the knowledge base needed to make this happen. A sincere thanks!

  1. We'll be glad to help if you're having issues - we're here to help. My guess would be you may have been using the included USB cable to reach your laptop, which tends to be more sensitive to noise for a couple of reasons. !, USB is a lower voltage signal, so it's easier for small amounts of noise to be picked up and misinterpreted as 'signal'. 2, the USB cable included with this adapter isn't shielded very well from this noise. For best results I'd recommend using this adapter plugged straight into your USB port (no USB extension to pickup noise) and use a DB-9 Serial Cable from the adapter to your ECU, which is generally better shielded and is a more noise resistant communication medium as well.

Ordered the PNP with multec injector clips, it is the nicest drop on harness I've seen to date and the customer service, packaging, and detailed instructions are second to none. Hands down would buy again and recommend. Alex Fornal

  4. 5 out of 5

This is a great entry level ECU for applications where weatherproofing is a concern. It also works exceptionally well for transmission control or as an plug and play I/O extension for your MS3 or 3-Pro ECU

Another superb PnP from the company that has changed the definition of standalone powertrain management.
